Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Every Story Matters

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness, encourage early detection, and recognize the millions of people whose lives have been affected by breast cancer. This year's World Health Organization theme is “Every story is unique, every journey matters,” reminding us that behind every diagnosis is a person, a family, and an experience that deserves compassion and support.

That message matters in the workplace, too.

Cancer doesn't stop at the office door. It can affect employees, partners, family members, and friends, bringing uncertainty, emotional stress, and challenges that others may not always see.

Supporting wellbeing means recognizing that people may be dealing with more than they share. Sometimes, that support begins with a conversation. Sometimes, it means making space for someone to attend an appointment, adjust their workload, or simply have a difficult day without feeling pressured to explain themselves.

Awareness is important. Compassion makes it personal.

Why Awareness and Early Detection Matter

Breast cancer affects millions of people around the world. According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 2.4 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer worldwide in 2024, and approximately 694,000 died from the disease.

Early detection, timely diagnosis, and access to appropriate treatment are essential to improving outcomes. Knowing what changes to look for and speaking with a healthcare professional about anything unusual can help people seek care promptly.

It's also important to remember that approximately 80% of breast cancers occur in women without specific risk factors other than sex and age. A lack of family history does not mean someone cannot develop breast cancer.

Awareness isn't about living in fear. It's about having the information, support, and confidence to take care of ourselves and encourage others to do the same.

6 Ways to Turn Awareness Into Action

1. Make time for your health

Preventive care is easy to postpone when work, family, and daily responsibilities take priority. Take a moment to review your recommended health appointments and speak with a healthcare professional about which screenings are appropriate for your age and individual risk.

  • Looking after yourself is not time taken away from your responsibilities. It's part of looking after your wellbeing.

2. Know the signs and take changes seriously

Be aware of changes in your breasts, including a new lump or thickening, changes in size or shape, skin dimpling or redness, changes to the nipple, or unusual nipple discharge.

  • These changes do not automatically mean cancer, but they should be assessed by a healthcare professional. Don't wait for a change to become painful before seeking advice.

3. Start conversations that matter

Talking about breast cancer can feel uncomfortable, but open conversations can help people find reliable information and feel less alone.

  • Share trusted resources with your colleagues and loved ones, encourage questions, and help make health conversations feel normal rather than embarrassing or frightening.

4. Offer support without making assumptions

If someone you know is going through cancer diagnosis or treatment, remember that everyone experiences it differently.

  • Instead of saying, “Stay positive,” try asking, “How are you feeling, and what would be helpful right now?” Listen without judgment, respect their privacy, and let them decide what they want to share.

5. Help create a more supportive workplace

A diagnosis or treatment can bring practical challenges, from medical appointments to fatigue and emotional strain.

  • Managers and colleagues can help by communicating openly, respecting confidentiality, and exploring reasonable flexibility where possible. A supportive workplace doesn't need to have every answer. It needs to make asking for support feel safe.

6. Make mindful choices about what you eat

Small changes to your diet can support your overall health. Try adding more of these six foods to your meals:

  • Green tea: A refreshing drink rich in plant compounds.

  • Berries: Packed with fibre and antioxidants.

  • Leafy greens: Spinach and kale provide essential nutrients.

  • Broccoli: Rich in fibre and beneficial plant compounds.

  • Whole grains: Oats and brown rice provide fibre associated with a lower risk of colorectal cancer.

  • Beans and lentils: Nutritious sources of fibre and plant-based protein.

While no single food can prevent or cure cancer, a balanced diet, regular physical activity, and healthy habits can help reduce the risk of certain cancers.

Remember, it's the overall pattern that matters, not one miracle ingredient.

A Simple Challenge for This Week

Turn awareness into one meaningful action.

Book a health appointment you've been postponing, share a reliable breast cancer awareness resource, check in with someone who may need support, or encourage a conversation about wellbeing at work.

You don't have to do everything. One thoughtful action can help make awareness more meaningful.

Because behind every statistic is a person, a family, and a story that matters.
