5 Ways to Ease Back-to-School Anxiety

5 Ways to Ease Back-to-School Anxiety

If the last couple of weeks have felt like everyone in your house is a bit more on edge, you're not imagining it. Back-to-school season doesn't just reshuffle the calendar — it turns up the anxiety for the whole family, parents included.

In fact, 77% of parents say this time of year makes life feel more hectic and unpredictable, and over half point to the collision between their calendar and their kid's as the thing that gets them the most.

It's not only about the schedule.

It's the quiet, constant tracking underneath it — remembering, planning ahead, making sure nothing slips through. You've probably felt that weight even if you've never put a name to it.

The good news: a few small habits can take the edge off, for you and for the people counting on you. Here are five to try this week.

5 - Anxiety-Easing Tips for Parents

1. Get the Whole Task Out of Your Head — Not Just the Reminder

The reminder isn't the whole task — it's knowing it exists, when it's due, and whether it got done.

  • Put the whole chain on the shared calendar — not just the last step, but everything leading up to it.

  • Otherwise the worry just moves from your head to a calendar entry you're still the only one keeping track of.

2. Batch the Small Decisions

What's for dinner, what to wear, whose practice is when.

  • None of these decisions are hard on their own — it's making forty of them scattered across a day that adds up fast.

  • Pick one window each week to knock out the small stuff in a batch, instead of deciding it live, in between everything else.

3. Create a Daily Check-In Ritual

Carve out 20–30 uninterrupted minutes with your kids — no phones, no multitasking, just being present with them.

  • During pickup, try asking about the "peak and pit" of their day — their best moment and their hardest one. It's a simple way to open the door for real conversation, instead of the automatic "fine" when you ask how their day was.

  • For more on this, Rise and Thrive by Dr. Alfiee Breland-Noble (a mental health workbook for youth — and for the young person inside all of us) is a great resource for helping parents and kids strengthen communication and connection.

4. Name What You Actually Need Help With

"Can you help with pickup" and "can you keep an eye on when pickup times change" are two different asks.

  • Most offers to help land on the easy, visible part of a task and skip the harder part — noticing something needs attention in the first place. Be specific about which part you're handing off, and it'll actually lighten the load instead of just moving it around.

5. Ask for Flexibility Without the Justification Tour

If you need to log off at 3, say so — you don't owe anyone your whole household's schedule to explain it.

  • And if you're the one someone's asking, don't require the explanation either.

  • A little trust goes a long way toward making this season feel manageable instead of like one more thing to defend.

Carry It Past August

Last week's post was about protecting rest before Q4 hits. This one's about protecting a little peace of mind — because a full calendar is manageable, but a full head rarely feels that way, even when the hours look fine on paper.

This week: pick one tip and actually try it — even just the pickup question. Small shifts add up faster than they seem like they will.
